Happy May Day! As the weather gets (slowly) warmer and we creep towards summer, events are just exploding in the Hershey Harrisburg region. This weekend is a big one in particular, with The Kentucky Derby, Cinco de Mayo and the official season opening of Hersheypark. Here’s a quick highlight of some of the area’s best: Image may be NSFW.

Start Saturday with the tastes of Pennsylvania. The 3rd annual PA FLAVOR returns to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Exposition Hall. The afternoon tasting event is a collaboration of the Brewers of PA, the Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association, the American Culinary Federation and the Department of Agriculture’s PA Preferred Program. The event runs from 1-5 p.m. with a VIP reception from 1-2 p.m. featuring butlered hors d’oeuvres and additional specialty beers (including one from local brewer Millbock this year). General admission doors open at 2 p.m. providing access to more than 30 Pennsylvania brewers, 30 PA Preferred food producers and 15 PA Preferred restaurants.
Meanwhile in downtown Harrisburg, El Sol Mexican Restaurant is hosting a Cinco de Mayo Block Party all day, featuring live mariachi music, Mexican folk dancers and more. The event includes outdoor food and drink vendors, plus a Couples Salsa Dancing Competition and a Jalapeno Eating Contest — winners receive cash and prizes! There is no cover charge for this event, which runs from noon to midnight.
You can also catch a Cinco de Mayo Celebration at the Garlic Poet on Saturday. Enjoy $5 margaritas, buckets of Corona, Short Rib Street Tacos and more. Appetizer specials include fried chili rellenos and beef empanada bites, and dinner specials feature a trio of street tacos.
Saturday also is the 139th Running of the Roses — or The Kentucky Derby! Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is a natural choice to watch the famous horse race. And while you’re there, you can enjoy a special Kentucky Derby Day dinner buffet at Mountainview Dining & Terrace Lounge.
Or stop by Cassel Vineyards of Hershey for a special Kentucky Derby Celebration featuring music and a special Cassel Vineyards-style Mint Julep! Plus food, the races and fun!
